This course examines the encounters between European powers and the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires -- as well as South Asia, China, Japan, and Africa -- from the mid-fifteenth to the late seventeenth century, a period in which none of the participants knew who would come to dominate, and most would have bet differently than history…
